The Triumph of Love (2001)

"He’s been taught to hate me above all others.  And what is more to distrust the entire female sex."

"I’m losing track of my own plot.  I’m supposed to be eloping with two different fiancées."

A ho hum movie.

It's based on a play, and works better on the stage.

Mira Sorvino plays a princess whose father seized the throne from the rightful King of her country.  Now that her father has died, and she is in charge, she has discovered that the son of the rightful King is alive, and being raised by a philosopher (Ben Kingsley) and his sister (Fiona Shaw) to hate her.

She falls immediately in love with Prince Agis, and sets out to win his love through subterfuge, not caring who she hurts in the process, and manages to seduce Agis AND his two caretakers along the way.

It's the stupidest plan ever, and really makes no logical sense, but she succeeds, so what can I say?  I guess as a nod to the play, audience members spontaneously appear on set watching the proceedings a couple of times, and it is disorienting and unnecessary.

It's light, and a little tedious, but it's okay viewing if you're really bored.
