The Taking of Power by Louis XIV (1966)

While I get the impression that this movie is extremely historically accurate, it is so boring that it's a chore to watch.

Portrait of the real King Louis XIV.

It is about Louis XIV of France, known as the Sun King, taking the reigns of power after the death of his chief adviser, Cardinal Mazarin, to the chagrin of his other advisers and his mother, Anne of Austria.  He became king at the age of 4, reigning for 72 years, and began to take control in his early 20s when Mazarin died.

Everything he does seems purposeful and methodical, and he doesn't waiver despite pressure from his mother.  The only really interesting part is when he has D'Artagnan, Captain of his Musketeers, arrest Nicholas Fouquet, Superintendent of Finances.  After that he discusses architecture a lot, chooses outfits, reads to himself (repeating everything a couple times for good measure), and eats -and I mean eats many many courses.  I guess it's showing how he established an image of the king as an etheral being by creating a persona for himself.

Discussing architecture.

The actor didn't physically match Louis XIV based on the portraits I've seen.  He was really short, and Louis was considered average height for the time I believe.

Very slow.  I can't recommend it.
