The Awakening (2011)

The Awakening (2011)

Robert Mallory: These boys aren't worried about bumps in the night.  They are frighted...to death.

Florence Cathcart: You can't hunt what doesn't exist.

The Awakening is a horror film I found by chance on Netflix after watching Mama and finding it disappointing (see prior review).

I had never heard of it, but it was much better than Mama: more original, a more complete story, compelling characters.

Robert and Florence.

Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall in a good performance) makes her living disproving the supernatural, but her conviction that the spiritual world is bogus is shaken when she is called to boarding school to investigate the death of a boy who died after claiming he saw a ghost.  Her aid is requested by one of the teachers, Robert Malory (Dominic West), and Maud Hill (Imelda Staunton, Umbridge from Harry Potter), a housekeeper at the school who is a fan of Florence's book.

While Florence investigates, the children leave for the school break, except a boy named Tom, whose parents live too far away for him to visit.  Things become increasingly strange, and Florence begins to question her own skepticism.

It's a fun movie for people who like ghost stories.  There are good twists and likeable characters.  It relies on innovative story-telling rather than gore, which is refreshing.  Tyler and I both liked it.
